Speciality Programs

The art program compliments the Montessori philosophy encouraging children to express themselves through various materials. Art theory and technique is introduced to the students through means of exploration and discovery, building a foundation for artistic expression and aesthetic awareness. Special cultural studies throughout the year expand the children's knowledge of not only traditional art forms from around the world, but the history of Art as a whole. Art provides children with a natural way to communicate thoughts, feelings and ideas as well as a way to develop an understanding and appreciation of the artistic process.

Yoga class introduces children to the concepts and mechanics of yoga, as well as the history and principles of Yogic philosophy. Children at MSM participate in a unique, education-based blend of Classic Asanas (poses), Pranayama (Breathing Exercises) and Guided Meditations will. The goal of yoga class is to strengthen and increase your memory and ability to focus, build greater self-awareness and confidence, improve overall academic performance, and build on social-emotional learning while supporting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Some of the creative techniques used to this end are: Songs, music, storytelling, art projects, interactive games, partner and group work, and engaging activities that stimulate cognition in a non-competitive, healthy and positive way.

Dr. Montessori identified the period from 0-6 years as the critical period for acquiring language. Consistent with her philosophy, children at MSM participate in French language instruction. Even the youngest children are introduced to the French language through fun and interactive games and activities. Lessons focus on French culture, and children are encouraged to work together on extended projects. The French curriculum includes games, French literature and an exploration of French customs and celebrations. French classes are designed to introduce basic vocabulary and a cultural approach to the French speaking world. Children learn French while having fun by listening to music, playing a variety of traditional Montessori games, as well as engaging in movement and dance activities, videos, and practical conversation.

Performing Arts

Music, Movement and Drama lessons comprise our Performing Arts program. Each of these aspects is divided into practical as well as historical and creative lessons. Drama lessons teach children how to express feelings with facial expressions, write stories, design sets and costumes, and explore theater history. Music lessons teach children to recognize various notes, become familiar with the structure of the music staff, find rhythm in both music and every day sounds, and learn about how music tells stories from bluegrass, to jazz, to rock'n'roll. Finally, all lessons incorporate movement exercises that teach gross motor control whether through learning the ballet positions, practicing stage blocking, or keeping tempo.

In Mindfulness class, through meditation and breathing exercises, collaborative games, art projects, and sensorial play, children begin to explore the idea that clarity of thought leads to clarity of action. By learning to focus awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, children gain mastery over investigating how to focus on the present moment by expressing, identifying, and modifying emotions. Mindful practice enhances the ability to concentrate and also hones problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Cultural Arts

In Cultural Arts students are introduced to ancient art forms from around the world. When civilizations were just beginning, life was more difficult for people. Art was used to pass on history to future generations as well as to add some beauty into everyday life. As a result, many cultures have formed rich traditions of decorative arts, crafts, and art that is deeply connected to nature and the environment. In this class, the children will discover various types of materials and styles of art, and gain an appreciation for different cultures.
